Foods to Avoid

One of the most common ways that orthodontic brackets and bands are broken is from eating the wrong kinds of foods. Hard and sticky foods should be avoided since they can break or damage brackets and wires. The following is a partial list of foods that Dr. Safer recommends you refrain from while in orthodontic treatment.

Hard Foods:

  • Apples (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Ice
  • Corn on the cob
  • Nuts
  • Pizza Crust
  • Popcorn

Sticky Foods:

  • Gum
  • Licorice
  • Caramels
  • Gummy Bears
  • Laffy Taffy
